The Goodfellow Air Force Base 17th Training Wing coin commemorates the rich heritage of the 17th air warriors who have always lived what their motto declares: “Toujours Au Danger”—ever into danger. Once a pursuit group in WWI, the 17th now faces new challenges and dangers. Its chief mission is to develop and deliver training in the cryptologic and general intelligence career fields for Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps personnel, plus students from certain Allied countries and national agencies.

When the Air Force activated the 17th Training Wing at Goodfellow in 1993, the new wing became heir to the lineage and honors of the historic 17th, also adopting its emblem. The emblem had as its most striking feature a column of seven black pattee crosses running down the center of the shield, used to tally campaigns participated in during WWI. It later became the 17th Bombardment Group and went on to compile a remarkable combat record during World War II that included the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo.

Now, the 17th Training Wing is an Intelligence center for the United States Air Force. The curriculum includes courses in cryptologic linguistics and analysis, intelligence applications and operations, imagery, targeting, and intelligence-related communications and electronics maintenance.

This bold challenge coin captures the excitement and heritage of the 17th Training Wing. The obverse is finished with rich enamels in the traditional colors of the Wing emblem: deep yellow and black, with the motto “Toujours Au Danger,” and “Goodfellow AFB, TX.” The reverse is the classic United States Air Force Emblem finished in blue enamel.
