The USAF Arnold Air Force Base coin commemorates the genius and dedication that created the most advanced and largest complex of flight simulation test facilities in the world. Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee is home to the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). The Center operates 58 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units.
Since being dedicated by President Harry Truman in 1951, AEDC has tested virtually every high-performance aerospace system used by the Department of Defense. Twenty-seven of the Center’s test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States. Fourteen have capabilities unique to the world. Jet fighters, ICBMs, Space Shuttles, global positioning satellites, stealth fighters—all were tested and refined at AEDC. The Center has become a ‘one-stop’ shopping center for aerodynamic and propulsion test customers by providing Mach 8 capability (about 6,000 mph).
This special challenge coin, designed for Arnold Air Force Base and Arnold Engineering Development Center, features the AEDC emblem, with “AEDC” and “Arnold AFB, TN” on the circumference. It is highlighted with rich blue and white enamels, as is the reverse of the coin, a bold rendering of the United States Air Force emblem.
