As the northernmost United States fighter wing in the world, the 354th Fighter Wing’s F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft provides our nation with combat-ready forces capable of reaching anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere at moment’s notice. This 354th Fighter Wing, Eielson AFB coin salutes the Wing’s vigilance and long and illustrious past.
Since its inception in 1942, Eielson flying units have seen action in WWII, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. Their fierceness in battle is legendary: by the end of Operation Desert Storm, A-10s had destroyed more than 950 tanks, 900 artillery pieces, and two helicopters in air-to-air combat. The Wing’s mission is simple: prepare pilots for combat. In that light, three times annually, the 354th Fighter Wing is host to “Red Flag—Alaska,” a simulated combat operation utilizing aircraft from all sections of the United States Armed Forces.
